Silver Diamine Flouride (SDF)

SDF is a common material that will be used throughout Dr. Barber’s office.  It is a clear liquid that helps prevent cavities from growing and reduces sensitivity.  Combined with the use of fluoride varnish, SDF can help build back minerals within the tooth structure, such as enamel, and kill any bacteria present in an individual’s teeth to prevent a cavity from forming or spreading.

The black staining that occurs with its application is permanent and is one of the biggest reasons that SDF is not used in all situations.  In some cases, SDF can cause minor gum irritation and a metallic taste upon application. However, these side effects tend to go away within a few hours or days.  Nevertheless, SDF is proven to stop 89% of cavities over a 12-month period, when compared to other treatments.

Lastly, SDF can also be used to prevent severe sensitivity in adults by strengthening the dentin beneath the enamel.  Overall, its superior efficacy is the primary reason that Dr. Barber chooses to use SDF in her office.
